The San Diego Museum of Art is the regionโs oldest, largest and most visited art museum. History
The Museum was founded in 1874 by members of San Diegoโs first art association. Since that time, it has grown to become an internationally recognized institution with a commitment to excellence in both programming and stewardship. The Museumโs campus includes the original 1907 Beaux-Arts building designed by architect William Templeton Johnson, as well as the May S. Marcy Sculpture Court and Garden and the Copley Family Wing, which opened in 1996 and was designed by Robert Venturi.
Collections
The San Diego Museum of Artโs collections represent a wide range of cultures from around the world and span more than 5,000 years of human creativity. The Museumโs European collection features works by masters such as Botticelli, Goya, El Greco, Rembrandt, Rubens, van Dyck, and Vermeer. The Museumโs Asian art collection is one of the most comprehensive in the United States, with important works from China, Japan, Korea, India, Southeast Asia, and the Near East. The Museumโs American art collection features paintings, sculptures, and works on paper by artists such as John Singleton Copley, Thomas Cole, Winslow Homer, Georgia OโKeeffe, and Jackson Pollock. In addition to its outstanding collections, the Museum also has a growing number of temporary exhibitions each year.
Exhibitions
The San Diego Museum of Art is home to a variety of exhibitions throughout the year.
