The San Diego Museum of Art is the regionโ€™s oldest, largest and most visited art museum. History

The Museum was founded in 1874 by members of San Diegoโ€™s first art association. Since that time, it has grown to become an internationally recognized institution with a commitment to excellence in both programming and stewardship. The Museumโ€™s campus includes the original 1907 Beaux-Arts building designed by architect William Templeton Johnson, as well as the May S. Marcy Sculpture Court and Garden and the Copley Family Wing, which opened in 1996 and was designed by Robert Venturi.

Collections

The San Diego Museum of Artโ€™s collections represent a wide range of cultures from around the world and span more than 5,000 years of human creativity. The Museumโ€™s European collection features works by masters such as Botticelli, Goya, El Greco, Rembrandt, Rubens, van Dyck, and Vermeer. The Museumโ€™s Asian art collection is one of the most comprehensive in the United States, with important works from China, Japan, Korea, India, Southeast Asia, and the Near East. The Museumโ€™s American art collection features paintings, sculptures, and works on paper by artists such as John Singleton Copley, Thomas Cole, Winslow Homer, Georgia Oโ€™Keeffe, and Jackson Pollock. In addition to its outstanding collections, the Museum also has a growing number of temporary exhibitions each year.

Exhibitions

The San Diego Museum of Art is home to a variety of exhibitions throughout the year. Recent exhibitions have included โ€œMonet: The Early Yearsโ€, โ€œVermeer and the Masters of Dutch Genre Paintingโ€, โ€œRenaissance Splendor: Courts, Cities, & Countrysideโ€, and โ€œGeorgia Oโ€™Keeffe: Living Modernโ€. Upcoming exhibitions include โ€œDrama and Desire: Artists and the Theaterโ€, โ€œThe Art of Foodโ€, and โ€œToulouse-Lautrec and the Stars of Parisโ€.

Educational Programs
